Sleek
swimmer
following
in the boat’s wake
turns and dives below
the swell and wash of waves,
leading to the spit where a
colony of blubbery bulls,
salty sea dogs and expectant cows
bask on a cloudy August afternoon.
Frolicking in the wind-whipped foam and spray,
playful pups slip In and out of waves,
graceful and magical mermaids
until they wrestle clumsy
seasick bodies onto
shale and gritty sand
a colony
of grey rocks
beached on
land.

My response to dVerse Poets Getting in Shape for Summer– Meeting the Bar, the Etheree. I have chosen to rework a poem I wrote last August after a birthday trip to see the seals at Blakeney Point.
So easy to visualized this. Such a delight to watch these creatures as I used to do when I lived in the SF Bay area.

Now that’s a place I wouldn’t mind seeing in real life – I’ve see SF Bay in so many TV programmes and films, it’s strange to think that it’s a real place and people live there!

Well, it is strange. More so than 23 years ago when I left. :0)

This was brimming full of delightfully imaginative imagery and sensory descriptions. Also, your attention to sound and rhythm in the piece was apparent, and especially well-suited to the subject matter. The generous sprinkling of alliteration lends this a playful, bouncing quality 🙂

This is wonderful. The image of those seals, and how you describe them letting me sea them. Great words to describe them also.

Thank you Bjorn. It was a most moagical trip out on a boat but we weren’t aloud to get off on the point. However, If you remember, we got closer to seals when we went for a walk along a local beach not so longs ago 🙂

So true! Graceful in water, but awkward on land.

What an image, and depiction thereof! And aside from the visual, the sound of that must be cacophonous! Loving this more and more…

Wonderful topic to write about. I had a similar privilege some years ago: seals on an outcrop of rocks – the smell was terrible!
