To My Cat Tosca

My husband found her body in the road this morning on his way to work.

You were my soul companion
throughout the day,
with your burnished fur
that changed from brown to grey,
your feline smile and gentle breathy purr.
I shall miss your dainty body
perched on my shoulder
or curled up in my lap,
on my chest or hip;
the way you pushed your head into my hand
snd watched as poems formed,
you seemed to understand
even as you tapped the keyboard
with your paw or chased the pen.
I can’t believe you’ll never do that again.

  1. Now I have tears in my eyes for all the cats who’ve left me after bonding so closely as soul and sole companion. Sweet tribute, sweet memorial.

  2. Cats have always enriched my life. Each word of your poem is so true. She was a beautiful little cat, and each one is so perfectly unique. Each one I loved the very best, and yet not one more than the rest. (anonymous quote) Thank you for your write about your lovely and loveing cat.
