Grandmother’s Dragonfly

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Transforming with Nature’s Wonders

This happened.

Through a haze of tears

And buzzing in my ears,

I heard the vicar’s voice

That told me to rejoice,

That you were like a dragonfly,

Your dazzling soul emerging when you died.

At home, I found an envelope from you,

Your handwriting – cursive, blue –

Reminded me that you were gone

And the circle of life would carry on.

I tore the flap to see what was inside:

The brooch you always wore – a dragonfly.

  1. Such a nice Grandmother, Kim. Every time you wear that brooch or look at it in your jewelry box she will speak to you, kind words of love and encouragement.

    1. I’m so pleased you like it! The vicar who wrote the eulogy was the son of my grandmother’s best friend who died some years before her – they lived in the same same old people’s complex – and he didn’t know anything about the brooch! I can still smell her lily of the valley scent sometimes and I still talk to her all these years later.

  2. Love when her dazzling spirit emerged — this poem is both sadness, dark – redemption, light — I can almost sing her wings still beating through the clouds. Thanks for sharing.

  3. What a lovely poem, and what a beautiful pin to wear and hold close to your heart your grandmother’s love! There are days when I see dragonflies everywhere…in the pattern on a shirt, or a pin, or even a live one landing on a plant or branch nearby. Perhaps sent by a loved one to let us know we are not alone, there love is still with us. I would like to think that anyway.
