Weather Balloon

Storm clouds jostle on the horizon,
ballooning and glowering,
they threaten to burst.

They have banished the full moon
to the depths of a lake
and inflated a weather balloon,

set it free to rise
high above the billowing mass –
it’ll be raining soon.

My response to dVerse Poet’s Pub Quadrille – Balloon

De has chosen the word ‘balloon’ for this week’s Quadrille, a poem of exactly 44 words.

  1. That’s some photo you found, Kim. That was an aside: your poem is such a perfect description you made me experience that-storm-is-almost-here feeling. I love these lines:
They have banished the full moon
to the depths of a lake

    1. I love those kinds of skies, ones with broody storm clouds, that threaten fat drops of rain – and even better if there’s some thunder and lightning! Poor old moon, though.

  2. Living in WA state, those skies are part of the family here. Nice tension in your piece. I’ve always liked the notion that weather balloons soar above the strife into the electric blue–when i saw your image, I giggled.
