My response to Chèvrefeuille’s Gift to You to Celebrate Our First Luster Of Carpe Diem Haiku Kai #2 “Use That Quote”
A few weeks ago Chèvrefeuille started a special feature to celebrate our upcoming first luster. In this special feature he gave us a challenge comprised of special features we have had at our Haiku Kai. Today he has created a special episode of the ‘Carpe Diem Use That Quote’ feature, in which the goal is to create haiku, tanka or another Japanese poetry form inspired by a quote. For this special festive feature he has chosen a quote from Matsuo Basho:
“There is nothing you can see that is not a Bashoflower; there is nothing you can think that is not the moon”. Matsuo Basho
Moonflowers only bloom at night and the bloom is wilted by morning. They have a really sweet, heavenly smell.

I love your haiku because I picture myself walking home after work at midnight and seeing the moon blossom before my eyes when clouds drift away just long enough, makes me feel blessed. Of course there are many underlying meanings, aren`t there to haiku? I feel a haiku is a work of art…a painting where the viewer can interpret what he sees. Your moonflower is stunning! I spent many hours one night just roaming through various videos and articles about the moonflower…what a performance!

I am catching up on reading prompts and news, congratulations on your beautiful cherry blossom haiku. It reminds me of the weekend in High Park in Toronto (this weekend actually) where admirers gather among the cherry trees the Japanese government gifted the city many years ago. I am told many people get their wedding pictures taken that weekend, many dressed in stunning Japanese garments.

Thank you so much, Kristjaan. I have to travel to London next Wednesday for a poetry reading – I have a poem in an anthology that is being launched. After that I’m visiting my daughter and her husband so I’ll be off-line for about four days. I’m going to miss my morning poetry.
