Day Tripping

Wind-buffeted, we listen for quiet waves below the pier.
Filtered through a bank of low-lying granite cloud,
August sun is determined to shine on Southwold.
Day trippers brave the sea, build castles on the beach,
while in brightly coloured huts, flustered mothers hand
out soggy egg and cress sandwiches that crunch with sand.
In the pubs and fish and chip shops, vinegar tangs the air,
salty sea-dogs lose their sea-legs and spill their Ghost Ship beer.

Day Trip

I took this photograph on Tuesday, when we went to Southwold for the day. An hour or so later the heavens opened and we had to shelter under some scaffolding to eat our ice cream!

    1. Thank you, Sanaa! Ellen went home on Wednesday, so David and I had a stroll along a nearby path yesterday and we’re off to another, more north-westerly stretch of the coast later today. 🙂

    1. The beach huts at Southwold are as expensive to buy as houses! They look wonderful, are well kept and all have individual and often very humorous names. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, a hut is a handy place if it rains, but I could never afford one! We’re off to a piece of coastline further north-west today. I’m enjoying our little trips out as we can come home at the end of the day.

  1. See how the seaside leaves such indelible footprints in our hearts and souls. Those soggy sandwiches…I went into a little souvenir shop in our town the other day and bought a packet of those little flags, the ones that you used to get to stick in the sandcastles….they are just the same.

  2. Looks like a wonderful spot for day tripping! Sans the soggy sandwiches….sitting in s cafe/shop/diner, eating fresh fish and chips….and perhaps listening in on the stories/tales being told by the sea folks sitting on stools up at the bar! 🙂 I would love to come visit! 🙂

    1. There are are a couple of art galleries, as well as an amber museum/shop, and a wonderful lighthouse situated in the town. Southwold has to be one of my favourite seaside towns.
