Sea Holly

Before this coast was swamped by sea
and dinosaurs vanished, was I simply holly?
I remember heat and thorns
as big as ceraptosian dinosaurs’ horns
and plants higher than the windmill
on the salt marsh edge that was once a hill.
Skies were always endless, as were the silent-black nights,
which twinkled with a million lights.
Now I am faced with extinction,
bring on the tempest of inspiration.

Sea Holly

My response to Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Saturday’s Mix – Flashback

Teresa is hosting Saturday’s Mix this week, and we are looking at flashbacks.

She says that flashbacks don’t just give us information about the past, but a better understanding of a character or hints of things that are to come.

The task is to write a piece of short prose of poetry that includes a flashback.  It can be based in reality or completely made up.

  1. I love the photo…I’ve seen similar plants around here (mid-continent Canada)….probably not the same but related. The imaginings in your poem are fantastic…I like the plants as tall as windmills.

  2. I read this poem two ways, Kim….as you intended it (I guess….) and as I interpreted it because of today’s political environment. These threats of nuclear war as a big part of our extinction that we haven’t really had to think about for a while. But I like your original poem and intention best.

    1. That’s the thing about poems, Jane,. Like children, we send them out into the world and everyone sees them differently. Sometimes they speak for themselves and sometimes they have to be interpreted. I am just happy that you appreciated this one. 😊

      1. Thanks Jane! I was recommended a light comedy on BBC iplayer and I challenged a friend to watch it this afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ironing had to wait. 😊
