Seahorses

We ride distorted monsters
beyond sandcastle borders,
past pebbles and fizzing foam
to whispering eel grass meadows.
Tethered to stalks, their snaking
chameleon tails swish,
graceful gliding curlicues,
neither horse nor fish.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Tuesday Poetics: Border, also linked to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Tuesday Platform

Grace is our host this Tuesday and is thinking about the news and borders:  people coming in or coming out from one country to another, some travelling for leisure or for adventure and some at great sacrifice and consequences for a better life.  She says the border may not only be a physical boundary of one town versus the other town, it may also be an invisible one, such as an imaginary, social or mental border.

Grace has shared three poems with the theme of border and challenges us to write some more, including the word in our titles or our poems. An extra challenge is to write about the invisible border theme e.g. mental borders or imaginary boundaries.   The form and structure are our choice.

  1. This makes me feel all kinds of clap-happy, Miss Kimmy. Sooo good. 🙂

Ooh, Lil Kim. “Lady Marmalade.” Thanks for the reminder. Gotta go give that girl (and her sexy gal pals) a listen.

  2. I was surprised to find out how small most sea horses are, like hummingbirds of the sea; they are so primordial; 10th cousin to the gators

  3. Nice description of the seahorse, you’ve given them appealing qualities. Great reading. I’ve never seen one, have you? Fakes? No, Google and I both think they are fish.

  4. I’ve noticed your flow in your writing is always smooth and as others have said here, rolls right off the tongue. Keep up that great rhythm- your details and imagery are what make your writing so unique and lovely! 🙂

    1. Thanks Sarah! I wrote the poem and then searched for an appropriate illustration- I fell in love with this one and it also linked well to the ‘border’ theme.
