Avoid the shadow of a black moon
on the night of Halloween,
and don’t gaze into a looking-glass
to see the future or the past.
For if the tides are out of kilter
and you’ve imbibed a magic philtre,
you’ll attract the desire of the one you see:
the you in the mirror won’t let you be.
The smile your friends think of as gleeful
will curl into a smirk most evil,
and those sparkling eyes of blue
will shimmer black right back at you.
Don’t turn around or walk away
unless it’s in the light of day,
not candlelight or pumpkin’s glow;
they will make its powers grow.
Stay with the crowd, no loitering,
introduce your dead ringer as your twin
and, whatever you do, don’t go to sleep
until after midnight, when shadows creep
and your Doppelganger must retire,
or the consequences will be dire.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Fireblossom Friday: I Put A Spell On You
Fireblossom is way ahead of me and has leapt into Halloween season, which is no bad thing as I love spookiness! She asks if we think incantations, objects, fire, pins and the like can alter actual events and, more to the point, people; she also mentions gypsy curses, love spells, possessions, altered states and Doppelgänger.
Oh, Shiver!!! This is classic, Kim. And scary. I love Halloween but you put the spell of Death on it!~ LOL~! Great poem.

If you like spooky and chilling then you must read The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. She’s coming to Waterstones book store in Norwich this month and I have a ticket!!!

Well, I like spooky and scary but I don’t like gory!~ LOL! I am a scary cat when it comes to horror. I’ll look for her. Thanks!

The rhymes add so much to the eeriness… this is like a chant or spell… I would not dare to go to sleep until after midnight either.

I agree, the rhyming adds to the spookiness of this poem and almost feels like an incantation or a spell 🙂 Beautifully done, Kim ❤️
