Dedicated to a Dandy

Snout-fair and sweetly pargetted,
you are a percher, peacockizing
in your silken man-millinery,
holding a slim cigarette
between long fingers
adorned with flashing jewellery.
You may toss your scented hair
and flash your painted smile,
they may buy you popularity,
but only for a while –
until your skin wrinkles
and your dazzling teeth fall out –
one day the fickle fair
will retire from your snout.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Scribble It: Awhape me!

It’s Thursday and Paul, also known as The Scibbler, is back for a second edition of ‘Scribble It.’ He tells us that experts at the University of York have compiled a list of 30 words from the English language that have fallen out of our consciousness and conversation and might conceivably make a comeback. He wants us to put that idea to the test by sharing with us that the list of words and their meanings. Paul would like us to pick one or more of those words and include them in a poem. I have chosen:

Man-millinery: Suggestive of male vanity or pomposity

Parget: To daub or plaster the face or body with powder or paint

Snout-fair: Having a fair countenance; fair-faced, comely, handsome

Peacockize: To behave like a peacock; esp. to pose or strut ostentatiously

Percher: A person who aspires to a higher rank or status; an ambitious or self-assertive person

  5. Whoa! This is really good, Kim. Parget I didn’t know, and percher must be strictly an “English” word. But it fits! What a hoot!! Snout fair….LOL~ I almost wet my pants on that one.
