Pavement cafés scatter
cobbles of Montmartre.
Whores step over ditches,
become painted queens.
He flings his cape, adjusts his scarf,
picks his way through muddy lanes
and creaking, swaying studios
of the Bateau Lavoir –
and dreams of dancing naked
with sloe-eyed models under stars.

My second response to Thotpurge’s Micropoetry Month also linked to dVerse Poets Pub Open Link Night
Rajani has continued her Micropoetry Month with a quadrille (44 word poem) and a haiku. I’m joining the party with a quadrille of my own, a found poem inspired by an article about a new Modigliani exhibition.
Evocative.

Love the mood… takes me right back to the artists of Montmartre. Beautifully done especially with that world limit! Thanks a ton for sharing!

Nicely done, Kim. I like how you evoked Modigliani and Montmartre in a few words–and I like the painting, too.

Thank you, Merril! I’m so pleased to see that your comments are not going into the spam queue – I found a couple there recently and wasn’t sure how long they’d been there. WordPress can be a bit touchy sometimes. 🙂

I must say that I often have dreams like that, the I’m not dreaming of being naked in public & no one seems to notice. Your brevity did not dampen the richness of your imagery.

Thank you, Glenn! I haven’t had those kind of dreams yet but it’s a possibility!

A great write Kim, capturing the atmosphere so well. I first visited Montmartre at night on a school trip when me and my class mates linked arms and sang ‘Nights in white satin’ at the top of our voices – happy days! 😉🎶

I was smiling as soon as I saw the title. My son gave me a gift one year, a book about and with many Modigliani paintings featured. This is just a beautiful piece that captures the Modigliani mood perfectly! Brilliant, as someone else has already said. 🙂

I would love to visit the new exhibition but will probably have to make do with the website for now. Thank you so much, Lill. 🙂

I’d never have guessed this was a found poem. What I would say is it sounds very authentically Bohemian Paris.

He paints mostly women and had a reputation. His work has beautiful use of colour and shape.

Short but really made me want to be there and live the sensual imagery. The painting too does justice to your poem.

The imagery, rhythm and sounds have such a distinctive frenchness to it that even a non-french speaker like myself can tell. A thoroughly enjoyable quadrille indeed.
