the surface of the river
reflects
metallic
flashes
of neon
blue and green
wings whir
and flash
soundlessly
a dragonfly hovers
then shimmers its way upstream

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Bits of Inspiration ~ Dragonfly
Susie tells us today about her inspirational daughter, Carrie, who is Artist Relations Director at Art Colony Association Inc., the producers of the Bayou City Art Festival, an important event in Houston. Susie says that, at this year’s Bayou City Arts Festival, she discovered the beautiful art of Ann Byrd and purchased two prints, one of which is a dragonfly. She has shared the totem meaning of the dragonfly and quotes about dragonflies.
For today’s challenge she would like us to write an original poem about dragonfly/dragonflies. It can be in any form we choose.
Gorgeous!!❤️ I love how you describe its flight as ‘shimmers its way upstream’.. it truly does.. doesn’t it? 🙂 Beautifully executed!❤️

Beautiful. Dragonflies and all flying creatures carry so much symbolism and the imagination runs wild!

Dragonflies are delightful aren’t they? They remind me so much of those halcyon days of summer and the delight of seeing them stop to say hello then dart off again.

This is a beautiful description of a dragonfly’s flight. I often think of them as winged jewelry. Thank you so much for writing for the prompt.

I used to be afraid of dragonflies as a child 😛

I suppose when you’re a child, they do look like small dragons! 🙂

The writing and the photograph go together perfectly. The dragonfly seems almost its own element, doesn’t it?

Thank you! From my experience of dragonflies in our garden, they are their own element. There’s nothing else like it, and describing them as neon doesn’t really do them justice.

love the “wings whir”; it evoked a strong image of the last time I saw a dragonfly, the wings beating so fast they were a blur

I love it when they visit our garden and dip in and out of the willow leaves.
