Throwing Poems

Poems
are grenades:
we remove the pen,
throw them into the world,
wait for them to detonate,
ducking  critical shards,
burning with awe
at the impact
and  heat
of the words.

Kim M. Russell, 2018

My response to Poets United Midweek Motif: Weapon and linked to dVerse Poets Pub Open Link Night.

For our motif today, Sumana has chosen ‘weapon’.  She says that weapons are varied; in fact, anything can be turned into a weapon if the user wills – one can find a weapon or be a weapon. She has given us some interesting examples of poems about weapons: ‘The Furious Gun’ by Thomas Wyatt; ‘Dream Deferred ‘ by Langston Hughes; and  ‘Incident’ by Countee Cullen. All we have to do is write a new poem.

  1. Love this Kim – words as a friendly healing weapon.
There is the other side to consider I guess – when words are more cutting than a knife…

  2. Wow, Kim, this poem definitely has impact. ..every line of it! When I wrote the response poem for Toni, I definitely thought of you and mulled over including you but wanted it to shine on Toni’s poem. This kind of loss really hangs on, doesn’t it?

    1. Thank you, Victoria. It was Mum’s one year anniversary on 9th of this month and I have been really struggling. I had two visits to a grief counsellor but I’m not sure how well that’s working. Even if they argue or spend a lot of time apart, daughters and mothers have a special bond.

      1. There is no bond like it. In my opinion and experience, we each walk our own path of grieving. There is no such thing as closure and the effects of these especially significant losses stay with us to our own end. In a way I feel like I am just beginning my grief process because of complications with Mom’s affairs. Now it’s almost over and things are hitting home. All we can do is accept it and thank God we had mother’s that loved us enough for us to grieve them. Bless you.
