‘Someone has a great fire in his soul and nobody ever comes to warm themselves at it, and passers-by see nothing but a little smoke at the top of the chimney and then go on their way’ – Vincent van Gogh
A fire roared in his soul.
All his neighbours saw was smoke;
they gossiped and had a little joke
on his behalf,
not feeling the heat of his passion,
the flames in his hearth.
He was born to glitter
once his star had expired.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Quadrille: Let’s Fire it Up
Our host for the Quadrille this week is the Quadrille Queen, De, and she has chosen a flame of a word!
Love the Gogh quote, Kim. Love the idea of a star shining beyond its life. Your jittered rhyme scheme here makes my ears very happy. 🙂

Amazing… love the way you used van Gogh (too)… our two poems could stand side by side. I wonder if we have just to notice that sparkle to build a great bonfire.

Beautiful tribute to van Gogh. Have you ever seen the Dr. Who episode involving van Gogh? It is one of the best and is so touching. Even those who are not Dr. Who fans would love it.

Thank you, Linda! I’m a huge Dr Who fan, have been watching since the very beginning. I also love van Gogh, so the two together is a bonus!😊

Yes… There were two (or maybe three) with Van Gogh in them. I agree – I LOVED it.

Good point about taking advantage and warm oneself in the fires of those around us.

Great use of the quote – and a lovely tribute. Warmed me up on a rainy morning.
There’s also a wonderful film called ‘Loving Vincent’ which his fans should enjoy.

Van Gogh seems to be in everyone’s thoughts at the moment. I like your portrayal, passionate and brief.

Indeed, what matters is that’s within us – not what others see.

Wonderful tribute to Van Gogh and to those people with fire to share, and people ignoring the fire.

Cheers Toni! One day those of us whose fire is ignored will be noticed but we might be burnt out by then.

Born to glitter forever. A good one – with fire roaring in his soul.

Oh yes, you and Björn were definitely riding the same burning star for this one. How tragic/comedic the reality and nature of what you describe and how we’ll likely only be figured out when we’re dead.

Where thee’s smoke there’s fire. Love how you played off Van Gogh’s words.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I (love? admire? feel strongly about) Van Gogh. There was such passion in his soul that just demanded to be expressed and respected. I think experiences he went through with his failed relationships, his failed ministry with the miners had such an effect on him. You really lit a fire in me with this one.I want to sit down for a chat with him in whatever heaven/next life brings to us. Care to join us? We’ll wait. :0)

I can think of a few artists and writers I’d love to chat with in the next life, van Gogh is one of them. May I invite a few more?

You betcha! Assuming Mary Oliver goes before us, would you mind adding her to the list?! Poet, but word artist.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we recognized the fire and passion in all of us. I think the world would illuminate with love.
