snow ghosts drift
in a late blizzard
rags tattered
dignity
phantoms of the fantastic
suspended in ice
and we hide
behind heavy drapes
misty panes
bated breath
while winter and spring battle
it out once again

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Meeting the Bar: Phantom Form – Shadorma
Amaya is our host this week and she asks whether hearing the word spooky sends shivers right to the source of our poetic inspiration. She says that the Shadormat is a phantom form enshrouded in shadows and mystery: a syllabic poem consisting of six-line stanzas, with a pattern of 3-5-3-3-7-5, which can be one stanza, twenty stanzas or anywhere in between. In honour of its nebulous origins, Amaya suggests we explore the fog, the paranormal, the unexplained phenomena of life and death.
You capture the dread of wintry things well.

It is getting colder again, we have been warned of more snow at the weekend, and there’s a shortage of logs!

I like the idea of ghosts in the swirling snow. I’ve seen them. On my bike rides I’m back to heavy coats again.

I ‘m inclined to stay inside when it snows – I had a very scary experience when I was about five which put me off snow for life.

Well now you have to tell me what happened. (I hope.)

The year I turned four, we had the worst snow ever. My mother couldn’t get to the nursery school to pick me up as my little sister was poorly, so some older children who lived nearby were asked by a teacher to accompany me home safely. The snow was up to my shoulders and I struggled to keep up, so they pelted me with snowballs and left me a several yards from home. But I couldn’t recognise where I was in the snow. Luckily my mother was watching from a window. I was soaked through and tinged purple when she got me inside.

That would be scary especially at that age when you’re learning to trust. Remember the snow suits that once on kept us from moving? Lol! Thanks for telling me your story.

Brrr, cold. My favorite two lines were,
“misty panes
bated breath”
showing how the onlooker can be held captive –frozen — by the neverending battle.

Oh dear, Kim…NOW you’ve made the upcoming weekend a reality. I hear rumours of snow again! A lovely write, though 🙂

Thanks Viv! I hope I haven’t talked it up. At the moment it’s pouring with rain, and we seem to have our own eco system in our little village, so the snow might miss us completely.

I enjoyed this–the phantoms of ice and snow, and we waiting behind the heavy drapes with bated breath for spring to finally win the battle.
I hope you don’t get that storm. We’re supposed to get another nor’easter Tuesday or Wednesday.

Thank you, Merril! We’ve had some flakes of snow already this morning and I had to scrape some off the car. Let’s hope that’s it!
