It vanished in a whorl of icy bubbles,
a kingfisher, the first one of the spring.
It drew a line through early morning mist,
it punctuated silence of the pond
with splash and sparkle – then it disappeared.
I waited by the river every day,
my soles imprinted on the dew-soaked grass,
to catch a flash of orange, cyan, blue.
An optical illusion in the sky,
the artful kingfisher eludes me still
with iridescent scattering of light.

My response to The Poetry School NaPoWriMo prompt for Day 27: Blank Verse, also linked to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads: Let’s join the children, where Margaret is our host.
Margaret tells us that she has always adored children’s artwork and recently attended an exhibition which highlighted some pieces that have received awards this year, ranging from elementary school through high school. She was given permission to photograph some images from the exhibition, which she has shared with us. She says we should feel free to write more than one poem.
Cant step into the same rive twice.

I have never seen a kingfisher… so for me it’s still a dream. Love how you describe that moment as if it’s still a dream

This is beautiful!💖 I love how you describe the brief glimpse of the kingfisher.. especially; “my soles imprinted on the dew-soaked grass to catch a flash of orange, cyan, blue.”💖

Thank you, Sanaa. I have just one line to update which doesn’t strictly adhere to iambic pentameter.

I love the image you paint with your words – seeing the kingfisher, such a beautiful bird. My favourite lines “It drew a line through early morning mist,
it punctuated silence of the pond” These remind me of the way the water birds make their appearance on the lake.

Thank you, Paul! There isn’t much chance of spotting anything much in this weather. I had to switch the storage heaters back on today but they won’t actually work until tomorrow morning. Even the cats are staying in bed!

I’m not sure that the like star is appropriate but I felt I had to press something. You always get the worst of the weather. It’s been raining all night and we lost power for a short while, which is usually a sign that we will lose it completely – I have my fingers crossed. Stay warm!

I love your dreamlike searching for another glimpse of this elusive bird, almost like searching for the Holy Grail. One can never get enough of birds and trees and water birds. It is 80F here today and sunny. Sorry it is so cold where you are.

The patience of the speaker, the joy in what she has seen and hopes to see again are as bright as the color of the flying glimpse. Perfect for your chosen inspiration… and for the season.

Thank you, Magaly. The great thing about birds is that they make you slow down, stand still and pay attention. Another reason why I love our garden, as they gather there and I can watch without disturbing them. But that kingfisher can only be seen by the river!
