Flight of a Bright New Poem

It germinates in the slow melody
of water glinting in the shallows
of the mind’s eye,
the interplay of reeds and light
that whisper through the open window
in the dead of night.

A brilliant fluorescence lifts
and shifts shape into a metallic
demoiselle rising
in the mesmeric shimmering
of wings, and the early morning sun
catches fire in its flight.

  1. Gosh, that’s so beautiful! Wow!
    “in the shallows
of the mind’s eye”–you make this a real place so I can imagine the rising with the dawn.

  2. Sigh. I feel like that I am sitting at the edge of this wetland, watching life unfold before me. Thank you, Kim, bringing this image into my life.

  3. Ahhha – love it! Love it! Love it!

Love dragonflies. And les demoiselles, of course too. and this poem captures that magical essence of poeming, of how it is reeds and stalks and light and lines, and flow of water and wings … and well, let’s just say … you’ve penned a bit of magic here Kim. Metaphorically and as a slice of poetic reality for heaven.

  4. “shifts shape” “mesmeric shimmering.” “the interplay of reeds and light”
sooo sooo beautiful here. Exquisite imagery! And yes, a wonderful comparison to how a poem is born, stutters a bit, takes shape and then a new shape and then soars. Love the image as well.

  5. A mighty metaphor, vibrating on silicone wings, jigging on dust particles within beams of light–the birthing of a poem is magical, and the prompts vary so radically; loved this piece.

  6. LOL. And every time I say to myself, people are tired of me writing about the moon I go, I don’t care. I am writing for me. I never tire of your poems Kim. On secondreading this is even better.

That’s how it starts to take shape eventually so brilliantly in your hands, Kim!
