It’s that time I fear,
when we are expected
to be of good cheer,
like a glass of mulled wine
or a pint of good beer,
to dance with the boss
at the company Christmas party
and regret it the rest of the year.

Ha… there is no Vegas at the Christmas Party… wonder if the boss regrets it too…

Ghastly time of year particularly in the city of London. Or at least it was back in the early 1980s. Otherwise attractive Essex girls vomiting beside me on the underground. Office parties at which secretaries were pleased to photo copy parts of their anatomy. Awful client lunches and dinners. Gosh I feel almost nostalgic.

I remember it so well. Luckily I had a good excuse to duck out of office parties – a daughter.

Nice sound in these lines: “to be of good cheer,
like a glass of mulled wine
or a pint of good beer,”

I hated office parties. I would show up for 10 minutes and leave. Oh if only Mr. Fezziwig conducted those parties full of gaiety and cheer.

I’d love a Dickensian Christmas – with or without the ghosts!

A great title for a new book–DANCING WITH THE BOSS. Add to the list of sour notes, those Christmas guests, those relatives that make you cringe.

This is frame-worthy and should be tacked up in the office break room when no one is looking 🙂

Thank you, Jill. I’m retired now but volunteer at local schools and libraries. I prefer the children’s parties!

What a delight, Kim! Especially after I watched “the Man Who Invented Christmas,” about Charles Dickens’ effort to write “A Christmas Carol.” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6225520/?ref_=nv_sr_1)

Have you ever seen or heard any of the Dickens monologues by Simon Callow of Miriam Margoles? They are absolutely brilliant!

Ha – The office party is coming up in couple of weeks – lucky for me it’s cocktails and hors d’oeuvres not dancing.

I like the temperament of this Kim. I can relate. Retired now, but used to go to company Christmas parties. The boss would try to dance with me, but I’d just tell him yo scrooge off… 😉

This poem took me straight back to the Christmas parties of a company I used to work for. The president’s adult, married son would make a point to kiss every female employee on the cheek, it was like some strange rite of passage you had to endure while working there.

That sounds creepy. According to the news, the boss at Ted Baker insists on hugs.
