On this March afternoon
outside my dusty window,
a smudge in sunshine
becomes a glint of lemon
and flutters into view:
the first spring butterfly
flashes me a yellow smile.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Get Listed: Late March Edition
Sanaa is back with ‘March: An Ode’ by Algernon Charles Swinburne and a new list from which to choose three words and write a poem on a topic of our choice. We also have the added (optional) challenge of throwing in a word or two of our own and mention it somewhere in our post.
I have chosen yellow and dust (as well as March and afternoon) because I have taken as a springboard a haiku I wrote this morning containing the words ‘yellow’ and ‘dusty’ – what a coincidence!
I did actually see the little yellow butterfly but was too slow with my camera!
“a smudge in sunshine becomes a glint of lemon and flutters into view,” this is gorgeously worded, Kim! ❤️ I love how picturesque your poems always are as they allow me to visualize 😀 Thank you so much for writing to the prompt 😍😍

Ah, looking up in the sky through the dust — “Is it a bird; is it a plane;” No, it’s a spring butterfly for lemon in the tea time, and a fine poem by Kim.
The poem has a warm bright smile. Thanks.

What a delightful sunshine greeting! I actually saw a few butterflies here during the winter because it didn’t get too cold for them.

Yellow butterflies are the best in my book. They are the only butterfly I remember, probably the first I alsp like the smudgy windows, from those pressed against it looking out all winter.
