Winter Apologia

I forgive the winter darkness
that carries deep within
the unspoken promise
of the electricity of spring.
Every dancing snowflake,
each frost-muted twig,
stows trickles of bird song,
brightly budding sprigs
of snowdrops, bluebells, cowslips
and wood anemones,
and bursts of fragrant blossom
in hedgerows and trees.

My response to Poets United Midweek Motif: Forgiveness

Sumana brings us forgiveness as this midweek’s motif. She says ‘sorry is the best word to earn happiness and peace if we are the wrong doer’, but what if we’re the victim? She has shared quotes from Oscar Wilde and Sue Monk Kidd, as well as poems by Emily Dickinson, e.e.cummings, Wendell Berry and Margaret Atwood.

  1. I can forgive winter with its snow, it is the summer with its extreme heat that I have trouble forgiving. I love the trickles of birdsong and the muted branches though. Winter is truly coming, we sit inside and contemplate our forgivenss.

  2. I was always happy to forgive the winter its coldness when I realised it was time to sleep for lots of living things. As for the trees it was a bit like spending winter for them in a nudist camp..
