Inside the ovoid of her brain,
only white noise can invade.
She is an embryo, curled in pain,
hiding in the albumen’s shade,
until the pulsating membrane
explodes and the fragile shell
cracks.
Now she is a blob of yellow yolk –
agoraphobia’s cruel joke.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Quadrille: Take a Crack at Poeming
De is our host today with a cracking prompt word.
I like the way the word “crack” sits alone – it gives it real emphasis, and changes the direction of the poem abruptly. Very effective.

Oh.. such a struggle it has to be… and I wonder how many that actually manage crack through the shell without breaking apart.

My grandfather also suffered from agoraphobia, but his was caused by the deaths of most of his family (parents and three sisters) in an air strike during the war – while he was out. When they moved after the war, he worked a few minutes walk from home and it was difficult to get him to go anywhere.

Eggs are always amazing. Such a fragile container to be pushed out of the hen and not break. On one hand I think abortion but that is too obvious. I will stick with the hen egg and the brilliant yellow of the yolk.

Getting out of the egg is difficult for the chick too.

Any phobia can be very distressful. Fear of leaving the nest, the shell, the house is a particularly onerous one. A powerful allegory here.

Very effective description of the struggle with phobias. For me, I felt the confinement of the egg, being very claustrophobic.

That white noise can be overwhelming. A challenge to crack that egg shell and survive.

It took several years of therapy to leave the egg, Grace. I an a nest-hugger, though..
