Wild Fruit

In the garden centre nursery, young raspberry plants long
to break free from pots, and run wild
in soil: sharpen up their thorns,
let their pale green leaves unfurl
and plump up ruby globes
fit to burst sweetly
on our tongues –
to be
sprung!

My poem for dVerse Poets Pub Quadrille: Wild Monday

It’s my turn to host at the dVerse bar this week, where we are going wild and serving up Wild Turkey, Snow Goose and The Famous Grouse. I was inspired by my cup of cranberry and raspberry tea.

  1. Mmmmmm, sounds delicious! I love raspberries, and marionberries, and blackberries, and tayberries. Okay, now I’m hungry for berries but it’s not berry season yet. And the store-bought off-season berries just aren’t the same.

  2. Delectable, Kim! I remember our Iowa gardens with the tangled branches of raspberries….and you’ve have to look beneath leaves to find the hidden ones that were most often the plumpest! YUM!

  3. Raspberries do love to run wild and sharpen their thorns. What I thought would be a lovely border is a lot of work. Love your short poem and the reminder that the burst of sweetness is worth the work. I’m new to dVerse but I don’t know why.
