April is a Fool

April’s entrances are never the same,
peek-a-boo is her favourite game.
Some years she has played the fool
and surprised us with snow, or she’s been cruel,
raised our hopes with a taste of sunshine,
and then showered us with torrential rain.
This year, March pre-empted her, keeping
us inside our homes while April was still sleeping.
This year, April owes us a favour from the past –
let her give us sunshine and make it last.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads NaPoWriMo Play it Again in April 2020: April is for Fools and Poets

Todays Play it Again prompt is from April 1, 2016, when the prompt was simply ‘fool’. I’m merging this prompt with Kerry’s Skylover Wordlist, sourced from Dylan Thomas’s poetry collection Deaths and Entrances, from which the first word is ‘entrances’.

  1. I have sunshine here on the west coast – but am inside my apartment avoiding the Dreaded Lurgy outside. It is still good to see old Sol, though. And wonderful to have Toads open for the month!

    1. It’s chilly and grey this morning, but according to the weather forecast, we should be getting some of your sunshine by the weekend. I’ll see you in the Imaginary Garden later. Stay safe, Sherry!

  3. LOVE the title and they way you’ve personified April. My best memory of April 1 is from 1997. I had flowin in to Boston the day before, for a job interview which I did land….in those days, weather forecasts weren’t so great. I had a light weight trench coat, a linen suit, love pumps…and was all ready for this interview! Luckily I arrived early on March 31st and tuned in to local radio…and heard a bit of a musing about “some snow” — I shopped several big department stores but they mostly had spring clothes out. I found one flannel men’s neck scarf and one pair of burgandy wool gloves that had a ruffle at the wrist! I woike up in the hotel on April 1st to a raging blizzard! The snow was moving sideways and they ultimately got 20+ inches of snow! It’s a long story….but I sure will never forget that day! April is a fool indeed!

  4. I like the playfulness of this poem Kim – the rhythm and rhyme works well in expressing the temperamental nature of the seasonal transition between Winter and Spring. Fickle weather makes for finicky reactions/responses …. and in these difficult and disturbing times, you’ve captured the essence of longing and the wish for “past due” hope and brighter, warmer days, in all senses.
