Free Breathing

Earth is an ornate
looking glass,
Inviting us to reflect
honestly on the past,
when fields were green,
forests of ancient trees
breathed freely, and we
lived, loved and laughed.
She wants us to remove
our masks and see
ourselves and Earth
as we are meant to be.

My response The Sunday Muse, where a picture really does speak a thousand words, also linked to earthweal’s open link weekend

I’ve been meaning to try Carrie’s prompts as I love ekphrastic poetry. I can see me becoming a regular.

  1. Kim, you remind me of my fortunate setting where I can look out my window and see green, thank you. Although it is not “the distant green,” bounded by a board fence in the back and houses in the front , and blocked on the sides, still I am fortunate to have what I’ve got.
Yes, more are waiting to be free of the confining masks than mot. Duty to humanity and order of the law compel.

  2. “To see ourselves and earth as we are meant to be” is the possibility this time of pondering offers us, if we only rise to meet it. Not sure everyone is on the same page though. Sigh. LOVED your poem.

  4. You do have a streak of Mary Oliver in you, Kim. Your way with word pictures drawing nature always lead us to peaceful places.

Apparently it’ll be a long wait, Kim. The new normal may apparently take 2 years notwithstanding a vaccine that may come earlier. Still it has to be a semblance of the current social distancing has to be sustained just to be safe!

  6. We (as a species)often see earth as our given, a punching bag between borders, resources to suck away, or just an inanimate object. She is indeed an “ornate mirror” and in it we can see our own folly as well as her richness around us.
