Smiling in the Sun

Early afternoon sun dapples the half-raised window blind,
the part of my desk where the computer mouse sits on its mat,
and my cold cranberry tea, ruby red and sparkling.

Outside, crimson-berried honeysuckle and wilted orange lilies,
wrinkled and raggedy, dance on the breeze, and a butterfly
flutters by, tempted by potato plants and courgette flowers.

As I write, I’m grazing on leftover bean and potato salad
sprinkled with a freshly picked spring onion (so skinny
it’s almost a chive) and dotted with black olives and capers,

and playing a song I found on Facebook, a video
of a favourite trio of sisters, harmony singers – and the flicker
of lips that’s been haunting me bursts into a smile.

  1. This is absolutely breathtaking, Kim 😀 so much to love here especially; “leftover bean and potato salad
sprinkled with a freshly picked spring onion (so skinny it’s almost a chive) and dotted with black olives and capers, and playing a song I found on Facebook,” it’s the simple joys in life which cause us to smile the most! 💝💝

  2. Kim, this is the genuine ‘good life’. Were that everyone so fortunate. We are here, likely the majority of your readers are. In our city of 6 Million plus our mouse pad view is small but beautiful, even the pool is landscaped.
