shadows
in snowy woods
facets
of crisp ice
the flit
of invisible birds
smoke
and skeletal trees against ashen skies
the light
that draws a thin line
across the horizon
the gentle grey of a heron

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Poetics: True Colours?
Mish is back for this Tuesday’s Poetics with a challenge to write from a perspective other than our own, to climb out of our comfort zones and look through a new lens – by writing from the perspective of a colour.
Mish wonders what red sees and, indeed, what other colours see. She ponders whether the vibe and personality of each colour is just as we have perceived it – or not – and whether some colours would like to rebel against the stereotypes we have placed upon them, which reminded me of Oliver Jeffers’ children’s book The Day the Crayons Quit.
Mish would like us to slip out of our human bodies and become nothing but colours in our poems.
You made grey seems so comforting… very far from dull with that heron in the end…
Made me think of a song

That last line really brings all these shades of grey together into something beautiful. We often think of grey as bleak, but it has its own unique beauty. I am very familiar with every shade of grey, coming from the North of England!

Thank you, Ingrid. I love grey and silver. I can’t wait for my hair to complete its transformation; it’s gone from light blond to dark blond with silver and grey streaks and it’s been like that for ages now.

I think mine would’ve already completed that transformation if I let it: I got my first grey hair at 16!

This is incredibly breathtaking, Kim! 😀 You have lend grey a sense of comfort and calm with your stunning use of imagery. Especially love; “the flit of invisible birds, smoke and skeletal trees against ashen skies.” Sigh 💝💝💝

The title flowing into the poem and each line after felt like a trail of smoky grey. Who knew grey could be so beautiful? I take that back…..poets know. This is lovely.

Grey is quiet and peaceful and a nice middle ground for the extremes of light and dark. Beautiful poem, Kim.

This is so gentle and lovely. Walking by the river so often, I’ve come to see how many different greys there are. I love that heron grey at the end.

Thank you, Merril! Earlier this morning, my normal grey was tinged with pink, the whole sky in fact, but now it’s gone and those grey clouds are edging their way back again.

50 shades of gray became the loveliness of grey. You packed a lot of energy and emotion into the fog of gray; making grey/gray proud.

Grey is beautiful. Here in Australia we have birds called galahs. I don’t know how well known they are elsewhere. They have grey backs and dusky pink tummies. They are what first helped me see the beauty in grey. Your poem is a lovely idea to grey.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I remember reading something about gahlas. I love everything monochrome, every shade of grey.

Sorry that last sentence is meant to say “ode to grey”. 😀

You describe the monocromatic beauty of winter wonderfully here.

Thank you, Suzanne. I’m a wearer of monochromatic colours and my home is decorated that way too, to allow the colours of soft furnishings and art to bloom. I love the grey wistfulness of winter, although I prefer to look at it from the warmth and safety of a window.

My home is similar, lots of grey and white though recently I’ve branched out into indigo as well. Clothing is often black though I’m adding more colour there too these days. 😊

I love the colour grey. There are so many shades, from warm to cool. Even on a sunny day, we’re surrounded by greys. A lovely exploration of grey, Kim.

Grey/gray is such a soothing color — misunderstood. The many hues of yhis color make great choices in interior design. It can go from bold to quiet. I like grey!

I agree, Rob, soothing but misunderstood. I’ve always loved grey, even as a school uniform!
