Picture a chilly morning on Charles Bridge,
Dodging phantoms emerging from the fog,
Peering at statues lurking at the edge:
A promenade to the Old Square in Prague.
Already buzzing, a crowd has gathered
At the southern side of the Old Town Hall;
Their faces are upturned like sunflowers
To the golden disc adorning the wall
As it ticks its way round the zodiac:
A calendar and planetarium,
Medieval astronomical clock.
This composition of the moon and sun
Is haunted by the skeleton of Death,
Marking time with a nod of its head.
