Nighthogs

The security light is triggered

As a pair of hedgehogs –

Not yet a prickle –

Amble through the long grass

In the silvery white noise of night

Grunting and snuffling

Sniffing out worms and slugs

Beetles and earwigs

Berries and roots

Roll up tight

Spines out

At the hoot

And swoop

Of an owl
