The Princess and the Pea

He wanted a real princess

So the prince rode far and wide

There were so many

But he never felt inside

That they were real

He returned to his palace

The king and queen

Could give him no solace

One night thunder roared

Lightning flashed

The rain poured

There was a knock

At the palace door

Revealing a real princess

Water streaming from her hair

The canny queen

Wanted to be sure

So she placed a pea

On the princess’s bed

And covered it with twenty mattresses

And twenty quilts of eider down

And next morning marvelled

At the princess’s frown

From her poor night’s sleep

The prince took her as his wife

Keeping the pea

For the rest of his life

Princess and the Pea
