Hoping for an Epiphany

I cannot recall ever having an epiphany or a lightbulb moment, although I would welcome one at this moment in time, when the world has become dark, full of war and disaster, my cat is dying from cancer, it’s almost the anniversary of my mother’s death, and it is so cold – although today a weak sun is teasing me through the window. I’m waiting for spring.

Kim M. Russell, 5th January 2026

Today is the first day back after a break at the dVerse Poet’s Pub and we are starting 2026 with Haibun Monday. Frank is our host and he is talking about Epiphany, beginning with a cursory definition of the word.

Frank also gives examples of haibun by Yvonne Cabalona, David Cobb and Ken Jones to inspire us to write about our own moments of revelation or insight in one to a few paragraphs of prose—usually written in the present tense—that evoke an experience and are often non-fictional/autobiographical. They may be preceded or followed by one or more haiku—nature-based, using a seasonal image—that complement without directly repeating what the prose stated.

    1. Thank you so much, Lisa, those hugs are much needed. We took Mojo to the vet this morning and her last morning will be next Monday. I’ve been feeding her with a syringe for several weeks now, but the oral cancer has got so bad she is having problems swallowing, and is down to half her weight back in June. I will miss her so much.

    1. Thank you, Merril. Sadly, her last morning will be next Monday. In the meantime, I am feeding her with a syringe, but the oral cancer has got so bad she is having problems swallowing. She is down to half her weight back in June. I will miss her so much.

      1. You’re welcome, Kim. I’m so, so sorry. I remember how painful and horrible it was for me when Ricky was dying, and how he tried to rally for me. I still miss him. I know you will miss her. 💙
