A city girl has become a grumpy old country bumpkin

When I was in London last week, I came to realise that I could never live or work in a city again. I hope this poem conveys some of my feelings.

Life in the City

A huge bunker

Hunkers

Behind a concrete veil

Next door

Stainless steel shimmers

Elevators

Lift immaculately dressed

Business people

Bankers

Lawyers

Slowly

From cave-like foyers

Through vertical tunnels

To office suites

Glowing with soft light

While employees

Are dazzled

By the quiet splendour

The view sweeps across

Skyscrapers

Reflected in a paperweight

On the boss’s desk

Is it unreasonable?

Life is boring

When the only challenge

Looming over the hill

Is a holiday

London Skyline
