I recently read an article about the continuing torture of bears…

which prompted me to write this poem.

Dancing Bear

The cub was snared

By poachers

No one cared

When he was beaten

No one was there to shout

When they filed down his claws

And smashed his teeth out

Imagine the pain

When they burned holes

For a ring and chain

Through his lips and nose

No one saw the agony

In the young cub’s eyes

When they made him dance

On glowing tiles

No one knows what it is to be

Born free

And die in captivity

Gosho on the streets working as dancing bear | standing upright in the street between the rails of a streetcar | owner holds the bear on a chain | playing his accordeon
