Elephant
In a world of watery hues,
of greens and blues,
her vision is binocular.
She stares at the moon,
oblivious to the stars,
her worn ears,
torn ears,
flare,
moth-eaten flags.
She sways to a silent rhythm
through over-
hanging leaves,
her periscopic trunk
r e a c h i n g,
feeling.
Her chest rumbles,
the vibrations
of her heart and lungs
ripple like waves
across her skin,
map of her life,
etched with grey wrinkles,
rubs and stains.
Her floundering feet,
prints in the dust,
track memories
as old as her tusks.

I have an affinity for elephants and I so enjoyed your description of her rumbling chest, flapping “flags” and periscopic trunk. They are amazingly sensitive and intelligent animals. This made me happy. :~)

Yes they are superb. You’ve probably heard of the story of Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog who are best friends at an animal sanctuary. A super sweet story. 🙂

Thank you Shirley. Elephants are fascinating animals. I’m just disappointed that I will never see them in their natural environment.
