Early Catkins

My response to the secret keeper’s Weekly Writing Prompt #18

Nature could not wait

To meet the early catkins

To tear winter’s shroud

Cease its chill lamentations

Accept spring’s burst of blossom

  1. An unusual image. I have never seen a catkin. It gives the appearance of being abstract. You meant the challenge with such conviction. I am one of the many who feel we would like to see the early appearance of our favorite spring plant. We seek for spring but this wish causes us to want time to pass to fast even though winter is harsh for some of us. It is odd some of the reasons we want time to pass. You poem is so natural and flows naturally off the pen. Great job! – jk

    1. I have loved catkins since I was very young, when my grandparents introduced me to trees and plants. At school, we had a nature table and in the spring, when others brought flowers, I brought a few twigs of catkins. I also like pussy willow, the ‘tails’ of which are silver and soft, like furry lambs tails. I think most of my poetry is born from memory, although I do like to write about unfamiliar things – for that I sometimes use pictures as prompts. Thank you for reading and commenting – it means a lot 🙂

      1. I also love pussy willows. Sometimes here I believe they are referred to as cat-of-nine-tails. As you, I often pull my inspiration from the past but I more prefer to use my imagination and see where it takes me. You are a gifted writer and I enjoy reading your work. I also like to express how something makes me feel if there is a reaction. You are very welcome. 🙂
