Maddening Moonlight

My response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry challenge #28: Moonlight by Edvard Munch

edvard_munch_-_moonlight_1893

Quicksilver moonlight

maddens

as it slips

behind clouds

and tangles

in the angles

of sharp branches

along the un-

winding garden

path,

in                     and                out

of shadows,

beckoning you

to follow

and then

sliding

away again

until the front gate

slams                                   heavily

and you stand

moonfaced

on an                                    empty street,

gathering darkness

at your feet.

  1. I remember that Munch painting from your poetry challenge in 2016! I too am intrigued and entranced by it, and it inspires different kinds of ideas and writing. I love the shadow movement in the opening paragraph, and the feeling that someone has been riffling pages on a desk and the familiarity of ‘strange lines that don’t sound like me’. Our synchronicity is even more interesting when I ponder the words ‘I now believe, not in ghosts, but in dead poets and restless words’ – I don’t think I’m dead yet, but I do have a relationship with restless words!
