I topple into the void of slumber
And down a rabbit hole.
At first, I fly
Through scudding cumuli
Of docile dreams
And then, I crash
Through thunderclouds
Into noxious night terrors.
I run barefoot through forests
Of threatening thorns,
Until the early hours,
When skulking shadows
Prod me into jagged wakefulness.
My heavy-lidded eyes
Are besieged by photopsia fireworks,
Figments of phantasms
That fade with the onset
Of Aurora’s light.

For my response to Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Writing Prompt, October 16th, 2016: Gifts from Mr. Sandman, I have reworked a poem I wrote and first posted in August 2015.
Our host for this writing prompt, Oloriel, has asked us to tell her a dream that was specifically striking and has etched itself into our memory. Alternatively, we can finish or tackle a piece a dream inspired long ago, or share an already existing piece that was inspired by a dream. She welcomes entries in all forms, and is especially looking forward to the frightening ones.
Absolutely lovely!

I really love the ending of your poem! The wording itself makes the whole experience unsure and relatable, is it a good dream, a bad dream, there is hints of both 🙂
