I’m sorry that our path divided
and led in different ways;
sad that you’ve forgotten
the joy of childhood days;
disappointed that my words
could never melt
the ice around your heart –
they might have spelt
a message you misunderstood.
I’m sorry that a shared past
is no promise of a future
bond of sisterhood.

My response to the Poetry School NaPoWrimo Prompt for Day 2: ‘An Apology for a Poem’.
On day 2, Ali wants us to write ‘An Apology for a Poem’, one which either says sorry for something your speaker has done, or includes an apology in some other way. He says that he’ll even allow ‘Apologetics’, the discipline of defending (usually religious) doctrines through systematic argumentation and discourse.
He tells us that there are plenty of good examples, most famously perhaps Robert Burns’ ‘To a Mouse’, but he has chosen ‘Dear Bryan Wynter’ by W.S. Graham.
I’ve had a sepia print of The Sisters on the wall of every house I’ve lived in for about the last 50 years.

I think we have all wanted to make that apology to our sibling at one stage

I keep telling myself I mustn’t be envious of my friend who has the most wonderful relationship with her sister.
