the scent of autumn
that sweet smell of decaying leaves
stronger after rain
the scent of autumn
seasonal melancholy
distilled in amber
that sweet smell of decaying leaves
wraps the drowsy soil
a golden blanket
stronger after rain
it mingles with petrichor
colour turns to grey

My response to Carpe Diem Weekend Meditation #59 Troiku … autumn leaves also linked to Poets United Poetry Pantry
This weekend our challenge is to create a troiku starting with the following haiku as the ‘sleigh’:
the scent of autumn
that sweet smell of decaying leaves –
after the rain – stronger
© Chèvrefeuille
I have made a small change to the English of the original haiku.
Beautiful..🍁🍂

Before our recent snow I was awash in these images of golden leaves and the smells of autumn….now it is all gone.

You’ve had snow already! Our mild weather is about to come to an end. Snow could be possible.

I LOVE that sweet smell of decaying leaves, one of my favourite smells in my favourite season. Along with woodsmoke on the air, and burning leaf piles.

I certainly smelled the colors, felt the change of the leaves, saw autumn dancing towards winter… as I read.
This is perfect!

You’ve done a stellar job capturing the ‘scent of autumn’ in little visuals, that actually conjure forth the distinctive fragrance one inhales on a walk through the autumn woods. Nicely done!

Thank you, Viv. I’m stuck at home with the flu and depressing myself by watching a film about Sylvia Plath with Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig. I hope I’m fit to travel down to Guildford on Wednesday. Hope you’re well.

Autumn is my favourite season, and I love that smell too – and I think you have created a whole lovely poem, including your revised prompt verse.

The sights, smells and ‘feel’ of fall have been beautifully captured in your words. Autumn was my favourite season, until I realized how much hope and energy there was in spring. It’s still second, though!

Love this Kim, in the desert, it is the sweet smell of sage that fills the air, after the rain.

Thank you, Annell. I love the scent of sage but I’ve never been so lucky as to smell it out in a desert or after rain.

This has become one of my favorite poems. The photo is lovely too. What did you use (and what settings) to get it so clear and colorful?

Thank you so much! The photo is one I found on Pinterest but I have no idea whose it is. I always add a caption if the image isn’t one of my own. Sometimes it’s hard to find one to fit my poems, which is one of the reasons I enjoy writing ekphrastic poetry with Visual Verse.
