One Starry Night

one starry night
to make that one painting –
the rustling leaves

silent comets fall to earth
illuminating willows

leaves and branches blaze
bright and silver with starlight
under the moon’s eye

only trunks lie in shadow
holding up the studded sky

an owl screeches
breaking the starstruck silence
sharp talons ready

its amber eyes two bright orbs
reflecting the universe

the moonlit owl swoops
a bright flash among branches
its echoing call

in long grass creatures tremble
beneath stars and rusting leaves

My response to Carpe Diem Weekend Meditation #107 Turn Back Time (3) Soliloquy no Renga: one starry night

This Weekend’s Meditation is more than halfway through Carpe Diem’s anniversary month, in which all the weekend meditations are episodes of ‘Turn Back Time’.

Our challenge is a Soliloquy no Renga (or solo-renga), a renga composed by one person. A renga has stanzas of three and two lines: the first stanza (hokku) gives the title to the renga and sets the image for the rest of the renga. We may choose how many links we use, with a minimum of six, and the last link must complete the circle by linking with the first stanza (ageku).

Chėvrefeuille has given us the hokku to start this Soliloquy no Renga.
