Waking to a Snow Moon

I woke up around three on Sunday morning to a snow moon that shed its argent light over fields and gardens. It seeped through the windows, spreading its sheen across the bedroom floor, bouncing off the metal bedstead and highlighting the ears of our sleepy cats. When I got up and looked outside, everything was glossed with icy fog, frost and shivering bird calls.

Frank is our host for this month’s Haibun Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub, when we merge prose and haiku.  This time we are celebrating a full moon known as the Snow Moon.

Frank reminds us that all twelve full moons have names, and the one in February is named after abundant snowfall; Celtic and Old English names are Storm Moon and Ice Moon, while some North American tribes called it the Hungry Moon or Bear Moon, due to scarcity of food and difficult hunting conditions. I love these names.

I also enjoyed the examples of a haiku by Mary Kendell and a haibun by Peggy Hale Bilbro shared in this prompt to inspire us to do some winter moon gazing of our own.

  1. Oooh I love this….and these words “It seeped through the windows, spreading its sheen across the bedroom floor, bouncing off the metal bedstead and highlighting the ears of our sleepy cats” are just so wonderfully descriptive!

    1. We had rain all day Friday, but after the frozen fog and frost yesterday, it seemed to brighten up, although still very cold. Hot water bottles again tonight!

  2. “Waking to a Snow Moon” totally nails that enchanting feeling of waking up to snow under the moon’s glow. The writing paints such a clear picture, you can almost feel the frosty air and hear the birds chirping. And that haiku? It’s like the cherry on top, making the whole scene feel even more magical.
