Olympics and Me

When I was young, I loved athletics, as it didn’t involve throwing or catching a ball, or a whole team of other people. While sprinting, I was in the zone, on my own, with the finish in sight. Long jump was another event I enjoyed and was good at, and swimming. I can no longer run or jump, but I love a swim in the slow lane.

Which is one of the reasons I don’t enjoy watching the Olympics. It reminds me of a time when I was happy to be on the move.

My husband watches all kinds of sport on TV, and will be glued to the Olympics this year. I might catch a glimpse of some track events, but I prefer to sit in the shade of a tree in our wild garden and read.

they can keep their sweat,
the fans and armchair sportsmen –
give me a cool  breeze

Today is Haibun Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub, where our host, Frank, has us writing about the Summer Olympics in a blend of prose and haiku to form that beloved Japanese hybrid, haibun. He has even found a poem and a haiku about the Olympics, which this year take place in Paris.

  1. I’m with you, in the cool shade, Kim. It’s funny, I could watch as much of the Olympics as I wanted to with only 3 channels, but I have no TV service now and do only streaming and DVD from the library.

      1. My father was a PE instructor in the army and an all-round sportsman, although his loves were football, cricket and boxing. All year long my mum and us three girls had to listen to sport on the radio and, when we finally got a television, watch it! My husband and my dad got on really well.

      2. LOL on your husband and dad getting on well. My stepdad was an athlete and thrill seeker. He played local league hockey and drove stock cars at Berlin Raceway which is near GR. He loved watching football but hockey was his all. Detroit Red Wings ❤

  3. Your haibun is a reminder that not everyone is ready to climb on the olympics bandwagon every four years … and it is beautifully composed.
