Cyclorama

Nature creates her own panoramic
mural on the inner surface of my mind,
and I am immersed in a manic
explosion of life in forest, garden, orchard,
overflowing with the language of spring.
It is no April Fool’s trick.
A tunnel of branches,
punctuated with lime green buds,
leads me into the wonder of Mother Earth,
a cyclorama of birth and rebirth.

On this first day of April 2025, the NaPoWriMo prompt is a bit of a tricky one. I love that the daily resources come from online museum collections and exhibits, a great place for inspiration, as well as this year’s themes of music and art. I look forward to exploring today’s resource, the Florentine Codex.

The optional prompt challenges us to take inspiration from a glossary of musical terms, or a glossary of art terminology, and write a poem that uses a new word to us and, if possible, work in a phrase from, or a reference to, the Florentine Codex. I chose the term ‘cyclorama from the glossary of art terminology, and Book 11 of the Florentine Codex, which is a’ forest, garden, and orchard of the Mexican language’.

  1. Loved the imagery of the poem, to me it shows that Spring bursts life unapologetically. I absolutely also love the term and that you chose it for the title, it is such a fun word to pronounce!

  2. Love how the use of rhyme leads us into the thicket! It’s pleasing to the ear, aligned with the natural wonders you describe, and nicely understated. I’m also so into the word “cyclorama.” It sounds extravaganza-like (seasonal cycles-o-rama!).
