It’s five o’clock:
a patch of sky unfolds hues
like Italian paper,
marbled mauves and blues.
Peeking over the horizon,
a new dawn breaks;
by sunrise,
the wrinkled ocean wakes,
stifles a yawn,
wraps the beach in waves and sky:
Nature’s early morning surprise.
Kim M. Russell, 2nd June 2025

Monday has come round again with the quadrille at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets across the globe, where Lillian is our bartender with a tequila sunrise. Yes, the word which must be included in our poems of exactly 44 words, sans title, is ‘sunrise’.
I’ve reworked an old poem into a quadrille and given it a new title.
I especially love the thought of the wrinkled sea… it makes it so visual to me (especially with a slanting sun)

Others have loved the wrinkled sea
and that’s what leaped out most to me;
who would not surpress a yawn
awake with the “papers” in the dawn?
A wonderful reworking, Kim x

Hi Kim, I liked the idea of the ocean stifling a yawn and the use of ‘surprise’ at the end, to rhyme with sunrise.

Kim, I love how “the wrinkled ocean wakes, / stifles a yawn” so gently animates the scene. It feels to me like the ocean itself is stretching into the morning.
