When everything else is deep
in hibernation,
I feel a kind of insomnia,
wishing I could join bear,
bat,
hedgehog
and squirrel.
Instead, I find myself
among sheeny black corvids
flying in
and out
of slate-grey clouds,
grateful for the occasional
pale blue sky.
Kim M. Russell, 15th December 2025

This Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub we are writing quadrilles, those poems of exactly 44 words, with our Canadian host, Mish, who says that in her ‘little southern nook of Ontario, winter has made itself known again’ – and it makes her want to hibernate. I’ve just returned from a visit to my daughter, and I feel the need to hibernate too!
Mish gives us definition and origin of the word she wants us to include in our quadrilles, which is ‘hibernate’ or any other form of the word highlighted in her prompt.
I so much would love to be able to join in for a long sleep… being awake feels a lot like insomnia.

It does, Björn. I haven’t been able to sleep much lately and being awake all day feels like torture.

Torn between the in and the out – the crow/snow is inviting but we are having rain after rain

We actually had a day without rain today, Laura, but the wind was bitter,

I was just admiring the crows today do exactly what you describe! I like the way you recognize the way they embrace these duller days. I can also relate to the “occasional pale blue sky”.

Kim, I sure can relate to the “occasional blue sky” instead of the usual “slate-grey clouds.”

It was so overcast today, Lisa, with a biting wind.

Sounds horrible, Kim. It was cold here and overcast but no wind thankfully.

Winter is a natural time of slowing down, yet human expectations don’t match this cycle of nature. I hear the effort of continuing in your poem. May you find a place of rest.

Oh yes, when it’s really cold hibernation does seem enticing!

Those pale blue skies with a dash of sun are a balm during the many grey days. I do feel like a bear wanting to sleep through duller days.

I really like this, Kim. Clever how you’ve juxtaposed hibernation and insomnia. Rest and peace and blue skies to you!

Agreeing with Jennifer, the insomnia vs. hibernating contrast is quite clever. I can imagine you flying in and out of those slate-grey clouds ~~~ Wheeeeee. Happy Holidays and thank you for leaving me a comment, Kim.
