On Wednesday we finally did what we planned to do on Monday – we drove along the North Norfolk coast to Blakeney and took a seal trip with one of the local boat companies. In a boat full of holiday-makers it was difficult to safely take photographs on his mobile phone, but my husband succeeded. He sent me a small selection and I chose one as inspiration for another poem
Seal Watching
A sleek swimmer
Following our wake
Suddenly turns
Dives below the swell
And wash of waves
Leads us to the spit
A colony of sea dogs
Expectant cows
And blubbery bulls
Basking in the weak sun
Of a cloudy August afternoon
Playful pups
Slip gracefully
In and out of waves
Echoes of magical
Mermaid’s call
Until they haul
Clumsy bodies
Over shale and sand
Beached on land

Beautiful!

Beautiful poem, Kim. I remember the seal trip from Blakeney very well from our trips to the Norfolk coast. What a stunning part of the country, with its open skies and unspoilt coastline – definitely inspiring.
