A poem about one of my most favourite places in the world

Venice

A labyrinth of watery lanes

Bridges and sighs

Music and colour

Under cloudless skies

The sacred peace

Of a sudden piazzale

Pigeons and the clanking bell

Of St Mark’s Campanile

The echo of gondoliers

As they round a bend

A romantic cliché

On the Adriatic sea
