Going to Bed on New Year’s Eve with a Good Book and a Cup of Tea
The novelty has worn thin
Fireworks only make a din
Their flash and fizzle no longer thrill
Crowds and laughter only chill
Me to the ageing bone
I ignore the ringing of the phone
The kisses and songs that greet the year
The dancing and the drink-fuelled cheer
Remind me that time is fleeting fast
Of those who have already passed
Forget the future
And cling to the past
