Stick Fishing

Silhouettes on bird-leg stilts

Against flamingo flame of sky

Perched on wooden poles that rise

From the cobalt waves of the ocean

The topic of photography

Capturing gaze and imagination

Age old vocation passed down generations

Off the southern Sri Lankan coast

Twice daily between sunrise and sunset

Even below black skies heaving with rain

Tugging and sweeping with the rod

In the treasured droves of fish

Until  they return to the depths of the sea

When the sun sets and it is too dark to see
