On first visiting Burano

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Poetics – Adventures in travelling

Leaning over the side

Of the vaporetto

Sharp spray cooling

Heat pricked arms

We watched the boats

Sun diamonds on waves

Faces in the crowd

Tourists and commuters

Brash and loud

Inhaled the heady mingling

Of expensive scent

Engine oil

Tang of the bay

On a sparkling day

We disembarked

By a dazzling blue house

Bicycle leaned against its wall

Strolled into an appetising haze

And dusty midday heat

Down the bustling street

To the canal

Kaleidoscope of colour

And fell

In the happiest of loves

With Burano
