Dark Dreams of Drowning

– Alessio Albi

Caught in a net of despair,

Rank water dripping from your hair

Patters like tiny fingers tapping

In the languid lake.

Feet grasped by reeds

And ponderous pondweed,

Lips tight shut against intrusive ripples

Contain your silent screaming;

Your nose still breathes

And your eyes still see

In dark dreams of drowning.

    1. When I was at junior school, we used to go swimming every week at the local swimming baths. One week I got terrible cramp in my legs and nearly drowned. Luckily, we had been practising rescuing people and one of my classmates managed to pull me out.

  1. The vivid dreams of drowning or falling seem so real…and we wake up remembering them. Well written, and I’ve heard it is like dreaming and there is a letting go, but I don’t want to find out. Scary moment for you when young.
